The Internet is still in its infancy. We can see
an important development in the form of Voice over IP (VOIP) that is showing up
both in private IP networks and on the public Internet. This development will
have profound consequences for the traditional telephony industry. For one
thing, VOIP is simply part of a richer fabric of Internet-enabled
communication, not an end in itself. Moreover, it dictates a very different
pricing structure for such services, considering that Internet services are
basically flat price services that vary only with the capacity of the access
circuit. Already many carriers have adjusted to this new reality with the
introduction of fixed-priced consumer service and advantage services. More
innovation will come from the major carriers in the years to come. Internet
services and applications will in time re-invent the technology itself. The
Best is yet to come!
SIP Phones
- Pingtel — Pingtel
xpressa phones are feature rich, open to add-on features, easy to use and
stylish. In addition to dozens of standard features, add-on applications
include an LDAP phone book, integration with Outlook, ACT! and WebEx, and
custom ring tones. An open interface makes new feature creation easy. All
features are made easy by hints that display on the LCD. Colors include
Latte (white), Sambuca (gray), Indigo (blue), Mocha (brown), and Mango
(yellow-orange).
- Cisco — The Cisco IP
Phone series is a standards-based communication appliance. Cisco IP phones
interoperate with IP telephony systems based on Cisco CallManager
technology, H.323, or Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) and, in the future,
Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), with system-initiated software
updates. This multi-protocol capability is an industry first and provides
investment protection and migration capability. Each Cisco IP Telephone
provides Toll-quality audio and doesn't require a companion PC. Because it
is an IP-based telephone, it can be installed anywhere on a corporate
local or wide area IP network.
SIP Phone Adapters
- Mediatrix — The
Mediatrix devices are adaptors that connect conventional telephones or G3
fax machines to a Local Area Network (LAN). They access an Intranet or the
Internet to permit high-quality, full-duplex, audio/fax communications
over IP Packet Networks.
Quality of Service
- Sitara Networks — Sitara
is providing its traffic management product line known as QoSWorks. The
technology in these products enables comprehensive QoS management of both
voice and data traffic. QoSWorks is the industry's first QoS platform to
integrate all of the QoS tools that network managers need to prioritize
all traffic at the edge of the network.
SIP-Enabled Firewalls
- Ingate — Ingate Firewalls
prevent unauthorized access to and from enterprise networks while allowing
SIP-based communications such as presence, instant messaging, audio/video
conferencing and VoIP. All messages entering and leaving the network are
routed through a firewall, which examines each packet and blocks those not
explicitly authorized to pass.
- Intertex — The IX66
Internet Gate from Intertex represents a new generation of advanced,
highly functional and compact broadband access products. The firewall has
the unique feature of handling IP Telephony and other applications
conforming to the SIP standard. Also the Intertex IX66 is an ideal product
for the small office space.
Gateways
- CommWorks — CommWorks
provides the Total Control® 1000 Media Gateway and CommWorks® 4007 Signaling
Gateway to bridge MCI’s IP Communications between an Internet protocol
(IP) network and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The gateways
integrate easily into a variety of network environments, supporting
wireline, wireless and other access technologies.
- Cisco — Cisco is
providing the 2600 and 3600 series routers for use at the customer
premises. The Cisco routers have the versatility to support data, voice,
video, and hybrid dial access applications, and high-speed connectivity.
